Handyman Business

You can fix almost anything in a house. The hard part is charging for it in a way that still pays after the driving, the hardware store run, and "while you're here."

The short version

$60โ€“$95 an hour, 2-hour minimum

That's the typical range nationally. The minimum matters more than the rate โ€” a $45 doorknob job 20 minutes away loses money no matter what you charge per hour.

What handymen charge

Small towns sit at the bottom of these ranges. Denver, Seattle, and the Northeast metros sit at the top.

Flat prices for common jobs, how to quote a list of "little things," and the licensing dollar cap are all in the handyman pricing guide.

The minimum, in practice

A handyman in Boise charges $75/hr with a 2-hour minimum. A customer wants a towel bar rehung โ€” 15 minutes of work. He bills $150, and says this on the phone first: "My minimum is two hours, so it's $150 whether it takes ten minutes or two hours. If you've got anything else on the list, let's use the time."

Nine times out of ten the customer finds three more things.

What a bad day looks like

No minimum. A handyman in Tucson bills three small jobs on a Tuesday: $23, $23, $35. Total $81. His day ran 8:40am to 2:15pm, 41 miles driven.

That's about $13 an hour. Nothing was wrong with his work โ€” only with his smallest invoice.

Get these right in your first 90 days

  • Set your hourly rate and your minimum, and say both out loud on every first call
  • Check your state's dollar cap on unlicensed handyman work before quoting a big job
  • Get general liability insurance โ€” property managers won't hire you without it
  • Decide how you charge for materials, and put it on the estimate
  • Send a real invoice the same day, not a text saying "$300 when you can"
  • Pick a service radius and charge a trip fee outside it

The licensing ceiling is real. Most states cap what a single unlicensed handyman job may be worth, and the cap varies a lot. Splitting one big job into small invoices to stay under it is exactly what regulators look for. Check your state contractor licensing board before you bid.

Plenty of handymen add pressure washing in summer โ€” same truck, quick jobs. The pressure washing pricing guide has those rates.

Common questions

How much does a handyman charge per hour?

About $60 to $95 an hour, and most established handymen carry a two-hour minimum. Where you land depends mostly on your city.

Do I need a license to work as a handyman?

Most states let you do small repair work without a contractor license, but nearly all cap the dollar value of a single unlicensed job. The cap varies a lot. Check your state contractor licensing board directly.

Should a handyman charge hourly or a flat price?

Flat price the jobs you've done fifty times โ€” TV mounts, faucet swaps, door hangs. You keep the money when you're fast. Charge hourly for anything you can't see the end of, like a leak inside a wall.

Do I need insurance as a handyman?

General liability is standard here, and property managers usually want proof before hiring you. Divide the monthly premium by your monthly billable hours and add it to your rate instead of eating it.

Should a handyman form an LLC?

Many do, because you're working on other people's property and near their water lines. An LLC separates business liability from personal assets โ€” it sits alongside insurance, it doesn't replace it. Fees vary by state. More in the LLC guide.

How do I handle "while you're here" requests?

Say yes, then say the price. "Happy to โ€” that's about another 40 minutes, so another $50 on the invoice. Want me to?" Doing it silently and adding it to the bill later is how payment arguments start.
